Nassau DA: Roosevelt Man Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison for 2014 Attempted Murder of Girlfriend
Mineola, NY - January 18, 2017 - Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a Roosevelt man was sentenced to 14 years in prison and five years’ post release supervision for attempting to murder his girlfriend in 2014 by stabbing her.
Tremaine Ashley, 41, pleaded guilty before Judge Robert Schwartz on November 8 to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (a B violent felony).
“Tremaine Ashley terrorized his girlfriend and nearly took her life when he stabbed her in the chest and slit her throat with a knife,” DA Singas said. “The victim needed extensive surgery to recover from her injuries. Domestic violence is intolerable – and my office works every day to hold abusers like this defendant accountable for their actions.”
DA Singas said on July 16, 2014, at approximately 6:50pm, the defendant stabbed his then-girlfriend multiple times in her chest and slit her throat with a knife. At the time of the incident, the 34-year-old victim was breaking up with the defendant and kicking him out of their basement apartment on Park Avenue in Roosevelt. She suffered a punctured lung, slit throat and stab wounds, but has since recovered from her injuries.
Following the incident, the defendant fled the scene in his Dodge Charger and proceeded to drive on the Southern State Parkway. After exiting the Parkway at Baldwin Road, while driving at a high rate of speed, the defendant crashed into a Dodge minivan at the intersection of Downs Road and Baldwin Road in Hempstead – causing minor injuries to the five occupants inside, who were heading to church. After the crash, the defendant abandoned his car and was found by police with self-inflicted injuries to his wrists while walking on Baldwin Road approximately three blocks from the crash scene. He was later placed under arrest.
