Officials: Elmont Man in Custody After Attempting to Flee Police During Traffic Stop

Massapequa, NY - January 16, 2019 - Seventh Precinct officers report the arrest of an Elmont man for an incident that occurred on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 6:20 pm in Massapequa.
 
According to officers, after pulling a vehicle over for a Vehicle & Traffic Law violation on Sunrise Highway and Lake Shore Boulevard, a Seventh Precinct officer approached the vehicle to interview the driver. The driver then abruptly drove off, heading westbound on Sunrise Highway, where he struck two other vehicles and continued to flee without stopping. 
 
Information regarding the incident was broadcast to other officers and upon responding to the area, the subject then collided with another Seventh Precinct police vehicle. He then abandoned his car and continued to flee on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, the subject, Dawan Dawkins, 29, of Elmont, was apprehended and placed into custody. Officers, after returning to Dawkins vehicle, recovered two plastic bags containing marijuana. No injuries were reported during this incident.
 
Dawkins is charged with Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd Degree, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 2nd Degree, Leaving the Scene of an Incident, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, and multiple other Vehicle & Traffic Law charges. He will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 1/16/2019.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
