Following reports of major outages, Verizon announced on Wednesday that it was working to restore mobile and data service to over 170,000 users who reported issues on their cellular devices.
Reports indicate that outages affected several major metropolitan areas, such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Washington, and Portland. It is not currently known what caused the network outage.
A Verizon spokeswoman, Karen Schulz, said that the carrier was working feverishly to restore service as soon as possible.
"We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers," she said. "Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience."
