Sid Jacobson JCC is pleased to present Faces, Laces, and Far Off Spaces, a compelling new artSPACE exhibition by Long Island-based artist Betsy C. Schreiber, on view through February in the JCC’s expansive 90-foot gallery.

A lifelong artist and award-winning communicator, Schreiber’s work moves fluidly between abstraction and realism, forming an ongoing visual dialogue shaped by emotion, memory, and movement. Rooted in a career devoted to helping others find their voice as a speech-language pathologist, her paintings reflect a deep understanding of connection between artist and image, and ultimately, between artwork and viewer.

With more than 45 years spent working with individuals to express themselves through gestures, technology, and language, Schreiber naturally integrates this sensibility into her art. Each piece becomes an act of listening as much as speaking.

“Art is a form of communication. When my work connects with someone, we make contact, even if I’m not physically present,” Schreiber said. “I am grateful to have a JCC nearby with such a meaningful place to share it.”

For Schreiber, painting isn’t just a static act, but a living exchange. She works intuitively, allowing the flow of paint and movement of color to guide each piece rather than forcing control. Whether inspired by landscapes, figures, or imagined spaces, her work unfolds through instinct and response, creating room for interpretation and engagement.

Working primarily in acrylic, Schreiber has also painted in oil and watercolor and produced large-scale mosaic works. Her art has been exhibited in galleries and shows across Long Island and has earned recognition, with citations for The Nude Woman and Apples.

Additionally, Schreiber is a published poet with two books, Shoestrings and Collar Buttons and Beach Glass and Bottle Tops. Select poems will be displayed alongside her artwork, further reinforcing the exhibition’s emphasis on communication across mediums.

Faces, Laces, and Far Off Spaces captures exactly what artSPACE strives to be, a place where personal stories, creative exploration, and emotional connection intersect,” said Jaime Teich, Associate Executive Director, Marketing + Communications and artSPACE curator. “Betsy’s work encourages viewers to pause, engage thoughtfully, and respond, reminding us that art is not just something we observe, but something we experience.”

The exhibition is open and will remain on view this winter in Sid Jacobson JCC’s 90-foot artSPACE, concluding at the end of February.
