Legislator Rebecca Sanin’s Office has successfully partnered with Walt Whitman Barnes & Noble and the South Huntington Public Library to collect and deliver more than 250 winter coats in just one month to Helping Hands Rescue Mission, a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity.
The community-driven coat drive brought together residents, local businesses, and public institutions to meet an urgent winter need — ensuring that vulnerable neighbors have access to warm clothing during the coldest months of the year.
“This coat drive is a powerful reminder that community care starts locally,” said Legislator Rebecca Sanin. “This partnership shows what is possible when local businesses, libraries, and community members come together with a shared purpose. Over 250 coats in just one month is a testament to the heart of Huntington Station.”
Helping Hands Rescue Mission provides essential services including emergency shelter, meals, clothing, and long-term support for individuals and families working toward stability and independence. The donated coats will be distributed directly to community members in need, offering warmth, dignity, and protection during the winter season.
Walt Whitman Barnes & Noble and the South Huntington Public Library both served as official drop-off locations, helping make participation easy and accessible for residents across the community.
“The South Huntington Public Library is proud to partner with Legislator Sanin’s Office and Barnes & Noble on this meaningful community effort,” said Janet Scherer, Director of the South Huntington Public Library. “Libraries are more than places for books—they are places of connection and care. This coat drive reflects the generosity of our community and our shared commitment to ensuring that all our neighbors are supported, especially during the coldest months of the year.”
“We were so excited that we could create a place in our store for our community to participate in this local coat drive,” said Kyle Goehle, Store Manager of Walt Whitman Barnes & Noble. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with [government] officials to help give back to our community for years to come.”
“This incredible outpouring of generosity has made an immediate difference for the families and individuals we serve,” said Kim Gambino, President of Helping Hands Rescue Mission. “Each coat represents dignity, warmth, and the reminder that our community truly cares. We are deeply grateful to Legislator Sanin’s Office, Barnes & Noble, South Huntington Public Library, and every neighbor who took part in this effort.”
“This effort was powered entirely by the generosity of our neighbors,” added Sanin. “Every single coat represents someone choosing to be kind to their neighbors.”
Legislator Sanin’s Office will continue working with community partners to identify and address local needs through future donation drives, outreach initiatives, and family-focused programs across District 16.
