Everyone takes pride in their ride, and one way to truly show off while traversing the roadways is getting a personalized vanity license plate that conveys a fun message or saying.

But that being said, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has a set of stringent rules in-place when it comes to what you can and can't submit for approval in terms of what you put on your license plate. And it just so happens that the DMV has just released a list of the over 2,000 rejected plates that people submitted throughout the course of 2025.

The deep-sixed vanity plates ranged from sexual and vulgar sayings to trademarked product names and humorous phrases and wordplay. Examples of personalization that the DMV put the kibosh on last year includes the following:
  • 5HITSHOW
  • DSNUT5
  • BEEYATCH
  • BYSTUPID
  • HOEZONLY
  • METH
  • D0.RAMI
  • MAFYA
  • LTSFNGO
  • FNCOOL32

  • SWEETASF
  • FOXYAF
  • DAMMMMMN
  • HEYYYYY
  • LMAOOOOO
  • PEPSI
  • NOKIA
  • ROLEX
  • PRADA
  • TEMU
“NYS DMV has a rigorous screening protocol for personalized license plate requests, rejecting any that are not in compliance with our regulations,” the DMV said regarding 2025's rejections.

If you're interested in getting a vanity plat of your own this year, it's probably best to check out the DMV's site first to make sure it falls within their guidelines or if it hasn't already been claimed by someone else.

If accepted, NYS vanity license plates cost $60 initially to procure, followed by an annual fee of $31.25 to maintain it.
