In honor of Officer Brian Sicknick, a 42-year old member of the U.S. Capitol Police who was killed in the line of duty during the riots in Washington DC last week, flags across Long Island have been ordered to be flown at half-staff.

In a statement Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said he also ordered the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge to be lit in blue in honor of Officer Sicknick.

“The actions come following National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, in which local communities recognize our law enforcement officers throughout the nation who work tirelessly to protect and serve the residents of their communities,” hje said.

National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was on Saturday, January 9.

On Twitter, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran honored law enforcement with a message.

“Today and everyday Nassau residents are grateful for the brave men and women in uniform who keep our communities safe,” she wrote.
