Stony Brook, NY - January 10, 2017 - Tom Needham’s ‘The Sounds of Film’ will feature exclusive interviews with ‘Spielberg’ director Susan Lacy, ‘My Art’ director Laurie Simmons, and the Executive Chairman of the Ayn Rand Institute, Yaron Brook.
Award-winning filmmaker, Susan Lacy, is widely known as the creator of PBS’ ‘American Masters.’ Besides being the long-running series’ executive producer, Susan also directed multiple films for the series including documentaries about David Geffen, Joni Mitchell, and Judy Garland. Susan recently left PBS for HBO, where she has made the acclaimed documentary, ‘Spielberg.’ The film features interviews with Tom Hanks, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Harrison Ford. Susan will be speaking to Tom Needham about her intimate portrait of the world’s most successful filmmaker.

In addition, Susan will be speaking about her efforts to help restore the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Centre, which burned down over a year ago. The Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Centre is presenting the American Values Film Series featuring screenings of movies like ‘All the Presidents Men,’ ‘Casablanca,’ and ‘Chicago’ at area venues until the theatre is rebuilt. The series will feature an amazing lineup of guest speakers including Julie Andrews, Laurie Anderson and Isabella Rossallini.
Laurie Simmons is a widely recognized artist, known for her photographic strategies as part of The Picture Generation—a name taken from a 2009 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art that included Simmon, Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, among others. Her work is included in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum, among others. In 2006, she wrote and directed a short film, The Music of Regret, starring Meryl Streep. Her film, ‘My Art’ was an official selection at the Venice Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival. This is Laurie’s first film that she has written, directed and starred in, along with her daughter, Lena Dunham, Parker Posey, and Blair Brown. The film tells the story of an artist who tries to reinvent herself as she pursues recognition in the art world. The film opens at the Quad Cinemas in New York City on January 12th.
Lastly, the Executive Director of the Ayn Rand Center, Yaron Brook, will be speaking with Tom Needham about his upcoming debate with economics editor, Gene Epstein, as part of the Soho Forum Debate at the Subculture Theater on January 16th. Yaron and Gene will be having a debate about selfishness. Yaron hosts the radio show ‘The Yaron Brook Show’ and is the co-author of ‘Equal is Unfair: America’s Misguided Fight Against Income Inequality.’
