Popular tax exemptions for income-eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities will be automatically renewed for the 2022-23 tax year following emergency action by the Nassau County Legislature.

During a recent emergency meeting, legislators voted unanimously to waive the 2022-23 renewal application requirements for Nassau residents who received the Senior Citizen tax exemption and Exemption for Persons with Disabilities in the 2021-22 tax year which are based on income thresholds.

Today’s action by the Legislature eliminates the need for in-person visits to tax offices by recipients of these exemptions amidst a spike in COVID-19 cases caused by the highly contagious Omicron variant. New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued an executive order permitting counties to opt into this waiver.

This is the second tax year in which renewals are being waived for eligible recipients of the Senior Citizens and Persons with Disabilities exemptions. In December 2020, Minority Caucus members advocated for and passed legislation to implement this policy.

“As the highly contagious Omicron variant continues to spread, we must take every possible precaution on behalf of our most vulnerable community members,” Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D - Freeport) said. “Today’s action will protect both the financial and physical health of our residents, and it is simply the right thing to do.”
