Snow Causes Delays and Closes Roads on Long Island

Written by Christian Abbatecola  |  03. January 2014

Snow continues to fall down across Long Island as several weather warnings remain in effect. The National weather service previously issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook and a Blizzard Warning, which remains active until 1:00 PM, as well as a Coastal Flood Advisory, which has been reissued for 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM today.

Much of the Island has already gotten six inches of snow, with Bay Shore topping the list at 11.5 inches and Smithtown bringing up the rear at only 3 inches; more of the white stuff will of course accumulate as the blizzard conditions persist.

The Long Island Expressway, which was closed until 5:00 AM after Governor Cuomo declared a state of emergency, has only just reopened following a three-hour extension which kept it shutdown to non-emergency vehicles until 8:00 AM.

Excessive accumulation has also caused the Long Island Rail Road to run on its lighter weekend schedule for Friday, January 3rd. Customers are advised to expect delays.
