Nassau County SPCA Winter Storm Warning: Keep Your Pet Inside

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  03. January 2014

Nassau County, NY - January 3rd, 2014 - The Nassau County SPCA is asking all pet owners to limit their pet's time outdoors and to bring pets that are normally kept outdoors inside, this includes outdoor cats.

Prolonged exposure to cold results in a drop in pet's body temperature and hypothermia. Frostbite can also occur in pets to the parts that are the most exposed and least protected by fur.. It often accompanies hypothermia. Frostbite tends to involve the tail, ear tips, pads of the feet, and other exposed parts.

If you believe your pet has hypothermia or frostbite please bring your pet into a warm environment and call you Vet at once!

Remember, if it is to cold for you, then it is to cold for them!

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement for Nassau County: Northwest winds continue to diminish...and will generally range from 15 to 20 mph with 20 to 30 mph gusts. This...combined with surface temperatures in the teens...will yield wind chill values in the single digits to as low as -10. Wind chills below zero could lead to frostbite or hypothermia for anyone exposed to the cold.
