Blizzard Prompts LI Schools to Release Students Early Today, Close Friday

Written by Cait Russell  |  02. January 2014

With a dusting of snow already blanketing Long Island, and heavier accumulation predicted to begin later this afternoon, many schools across Long Island have made the call to let classes out early or close all together on was the first day back after winter break for some local students. Some schools have even announced that they will be closing or delayed in opening tomorrow, a surprisingly early decision, prompted by the National Weather Service's Blizzard Warning, which is in effect for Long Island from 6 PM this evening, until 1 PM Friday afternoon.

Currently, there is also a Hazardous Weather Outlook in effect  - the NWS warns that the heavy snowfall and high winds have the potential to make traveling extremely dangerous.  With whiteout conditions very likely in the near future, local schools and colleges have decided that it's better safe than sorry, and are following the advice to stay off the roads and not travel, in an effort to keep their  students safe. According to Governor Cuomo, there is also a possibility that local roads, including the Long Island Expressway, will be closed, if the conditions are deemed too dangerous, and it becomes unsafe to travel.

Although classes have just restarted, some students are looking forward to 2014's first snow day, which creates a three day weekend for enjoying outdoor winter fun.
