Upland Farm Sanctuary, true to its name, appears to be an old dairy farm complete with silo and open fields that once served as cattle pastures. Due to the acidic soils at Upland Farm it has been difficult to fertilize and has been used to raise livestock as opposed to cultivation. It was most likely used to for sheep ranching for wool in colonial eras until the Nichols family purchased the land in the 1920s and began raising cattle effectively turning the land into a dairy farm until 1962. Today the building serves as an office for the Nature Conservancy’s Long Island Chapter. A double-loop trails winds through the farms 97-acres which consists of meadows, forested areas and a white pine-shaded ravine.
