CMEE - Children's Museum of the East End

Written by museums  |  23. December 2005

Pack up the kids (under 10) and head out for an adventure at the new children's museum in Bridgehampton. CMEE, the Children's Museum of the East End is a real fun place with tons of things to do and see. Heading across a boardwalk through the woods is a great way to start the adventure. The building is inviting and the exhibits so user friendly. Adults will find another layer of information to check out while the kids do their thing. There is a lot to absorb and the museum can be investigated again and again. Hard to say what was my favorite experience, though I was partial to the potato chip 'factory.' We activated the machinery by dumping in a potato and then watched the process from spud to chip wrapping. Exhibits are based on east end history and local economy and resources. The great big fire truck can be activated and kids can jump into fire fighting gear. Information on local volunteer firefighters is posted to tie in the experience with the reality of volunteering. My friend (a retired educator/administrator) and I were 'wowing' and 'ooohing' as we went from library to lighthouse, through a 'dead' tree, under a bed and up to a ship's deck. We could see that there is too much to see and do in one visit...plus we need to come back with some kiddies. The outdoor amphitheater expands the experience with scheduled programming during the nice weather. A trip around the grounds also extends the visit with more interactive and educational fun. The museum is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 am to 5:30 pm. Friday is late night, staying open 'til 6:30 pm. Sunday hours are 10 am to 5:30 pm. The museum is closed on Tuesdays. Admission for under 1 year olds is free; 12 and under costs $5; teens and grownups pay $7 and seniors come in for $5. Special programming can be found at the museum's website, www.CMEE.org, or call 631-537-8250 about special events and birthday parties.
