The County surpassed its 2020 goal of 150 lanes miles, completing 172 lane miles as of today, utilizing $33 million from the County’s capital plan. This comes following 2019’s record-breaking roadway improvements, including resurfacing an unprecedented 207 lane miles of County road, tripling the amount repaved in 2017. Despite, the continued financial devastation the County faces from the impact of the pandemic, Curran commits to continuing ambitious paving plans in 2021 by restoring another 150 lane miles. 2021’s strategy includes an investment of $35 million from the County’s capital plan for five roadway resurfacing contracts.
“The pandemic has not put the brakes on our progress or commitment to restoring the County’s pothole-ridden roads,” said County Executive Curran. “I am proud to share that despite the fiscal restraints of the pandemic, we surpassed our goal for 2020 and are moving full speed ahead in 2021, embarking on our third year in a row of unprecedented road repairs. Investments in our infrastructure are investments in our economic recovery – and I am determined not to slide back to where we used to be and jeopardize the immense progress we’ve made to get our roads in top-notch condition.”
In addition to the $33 million utilized for 2020, this year, the County’s DPW crews performed $600,000 of “where and when” repairs across the County– spontaneous, critical repairs to the roads, where and when needed on short notice. DPW crews have also reported filling a total of approximately 90,000 potholes this year.
Some of the major sections of roadways paved in 2020 include:
- Three segments of Old Country Road in Garden City, Mineola, Carle Place and Plainview
- Three segments of the LIE N. Service Rd., in Roslyn Heights, North Hills and Lake Success
- Two segments of Merrick Road, in Merrick & Freeport
- Peninsula Blvd in Lynbrook
- Community Drive in Manhasset
- Nassau Road in Roosevelt
- Lakeville Rd, in N. New Hyde Park
In 2021, in addition to the County’s regular resurfacing program, the Department and its contractors will be in construction on four road rehabilitation projects including:
- Manorhaven Blvd in Manorhaven
- Austin Blvd in Island Park
- Grand Ave in Baldwin
- Ocean/Merrick intersection in Lynbrook
These rehabilitation projects not only include the replacement of crumbling pavement, but they also address traffic safety issues, improve pedestrian safety and drainage.
The website www.nassaucountyny.gov/roadwork launched last year, allows the public to see which County Roads were resurfaced in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and is being updated with paving plans for 2021.
