GSSC's 8th Annual Holiday Light Show - A Spectacular You Can't Miss!

Written by Long Island  |  15. December 2011

The 8th annual Girl Scouts Holiday Light Show shone brightly as we pulled into Camp Edey.  One child snored in the back while the other giggled with anticipation.  Signs told us to tune our radio to 87.9 FM for a commercial free station playing all of our holiday favorites.  My SUV was filled with smiles, music and holiday cheer…and some snoring.  The light show was wonderful and included everything my 4-year-old needed for a magical evening.  A Thomas the tank engine display was the first sign that we had brought him to the right place, followed by a pirate ship scene, a castle, toy store scene, snowmen, reindeer and Christmas trees—all the things that a preschoolers dreams are made of!

The show has been rated as one of the top light shows in the area and is changed slightly ever year with newly built displays.  Every display has a theme and all scenes were easily viewed from all car windows.  We were also handed 3D glasses that are intended to make viewing the lights extra sparkly, though my mother said it felt more like an acid trip.

After driving through the lights show we stopped at the Holiday Village for more festive fun.  Santa was there and available for pictures or to hear your child’s Christmas wishes.  The boys and I (both now fully conscious) took our picture with Santa and the boys told him about the long list of toys they had circled in the Toys R Us catalog.  The Holiday Village is also where the Girl Scouts present their “Hall of Trees.”  The girls and volunteers decorate the Christmas trees and then distribute them to transitional housing shelters and adult and veteran homes for the holiday season.

Last year the light show raised close to $100,000 that goes toward the Girl Scout Program and outreach services and allows them to give to children in need the funds to attend their summer camp program.  The Girls Scouts are a nation-wide group that seeks to provide confidence boosting activities for girls and teaches them the importance of giving back.

The show is at 600 Lakeview Avenue, Bayport.  Follow the signs and enjoy!  And don’t forget to visit Santa after for photos and hot cocoa.  Happy Holidays!
