The New York Mets have made a notable addition to their offseason roster, agreeing to terms with veteran infielder Jorge Polanco on a two-year contract worth $40 million, sources report.
Polanco, 32, comes to Queens after a strong 2025 season with the Seattle Mariners, where he hit 26 home runs and posted an .821 OPS across 138 games. While he’s spent much of his recent time as a designated hitter, Polanco offers versatility — capable of playing multiple infield positions — and is expected to primarily contribute as a first baseman and DH for the Mets.
The move marks one of the Mets’ first significant offensive acquisitions following a busy Winter Meetings period that saw longtime slugger Pete Alonso leave in free agency. Alonso signed a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles, leaving a big power void in New York’s lineup.
Polanco’s addition comes amid wider roster turnover for the Mets, who also saw closer Edwin Díaz join the Los Angeles Dodgers and outfielder Brandon Nimmo traded to the Texas Rangers earlier in the offseason.
While the Polanco signing doesn’t fully replace Alonso’s production, it gives the Mets a proven bat with flexibility as they continue reshaping the lineup. Expect New York to remain active in free agency and trade talks as they look to bolster both the offense and pitching depth ahead of the 2026 campaign.
