Sierra Club of LI Hosts Their Annual Ski Trip

Written by Long Island  |  13. December 2011

You can't beat Jackson, New Hampshire, for east coast cross country skiing. The Jackson Ski Touring Foundation (http://www.jacksonxc.org/) describes it by saying: "Imagine a whole New England Village dedicated to Nordic skiing, with a white steepled church, covered bridges, rivers with cascading waterfalls, sundry eateries, charming country inns and a hundred miles of cross country ski trails... " This is a very accurate description of the winter wonderland that awaits you. For downhill skiers, Black Mountain ski center is a short distance from where you will be staying. The lodge, the Eagle Mountain House, has two dining rooms, a tavern, a large main lobby with a huge fireplace and big comfy chairs, many reading nooks, and charming private rooms. Across the street is a level and open field of more than 200 acres that provides tracked cross country skiing. Those trails are part of the larger Jackson Ski Touring Trail System which provides roughly 100 miles of groomed trails. For the non-skier, there are miles of walking/snowshoeing trails and shopping in the quaint town of Jackson as well as outlet shopping in the town of Conway, a few miles south of Jackson on Route 93. Meals at the lodge, bus transportation and room costs are included in the $398 per person charge. To register, contact True Hampton at 516-883-7850 before the seats are gone. This trip is organized by the Sierra Club Long Island Group, a non-profit environmental organization.
