Commuter Update: Ocean Parkway Reopened, Repairs Continue

Written by Amy Gernon  |  27. November 2012

Ocean Parkway reopened Monday after being closed for nearly a month with severe damage resulting from Superstorm Sandy.

Motorists are warned to heed the 35 mph speed limit since traffic is only permitted on the undamaged westbound lanes, with one lane of traffic open in each direction between Cedar and Tobay beaches.

"Step by step our state's infrastructure is being restored after the catastrophic destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

Cuomo has said it will cost the state approximately $35 million for repairs to the parkway, the 1.6 miles of sand dunes east of Gilgo Beach that were swept away, and the traffic circle at Robert Moses State Park.

The repairs will be completed by Memorial Day.  In the meantime, the state Department of Transportation and Department of Environmental Conservation are working on repair designs and restoring the parkway to drivable conditions.

Robert Moses State Park is also expected to reopen by Memorial Day, but Field 2 at Jones Beach has already reopened, and Field 6 is schedule to open later this week for those beach lovers willing to brave the cold weather.
