LIRR Offers Extra Thanksgiving Weekend Service

Written by Amy Gernon  |  22. November 2012

Electrical problems forced a suspension of Long Island Rail Road service into and out of Penn Station on Thanksgiving Eve, adding to the chaos of the biggest travel day of the year.

Service has since re-opened, but the MTA warned riders to expect delays and cancellations, and applies to all branches.  The LIRR is still operating on its “near-normal” post-Sandy schedule.

The LIRR also announced additional services for Thanksgiving weekend to accommodate the regions Black Friday shoppers.  On Nov. 23, the LIRR will run a near-normal weekday train schedule, with off-peak fares in effect all day.  Families travelling by rail can get extra savings with the advanced purchase of tickets for children ages 5 to 11 at a cost of 75 cents.  Children under five ride for free, and weekly/monthly card ticket holders only need to purchase children’s tickets.

Repairs continue on the Long Beach branch, which suffered significant flood-damage during Superstorm Sandy.  Diesel train service will be provided between Long Beach and Lynbook on Friday from 5 a.m. and 9 p.m.  On Thanksgiving, and Thanksgiving weekend, bus shuttle service will be provided between Long Beach and Lynbrook from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.  Check here for details.

Beginning the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the LIRR will be adding extra weekend services for the entire holiday season, until New Year’s Day.

The LIRR recommends purchasing tickets before you board any trains.
