Announcing that Author/historian Jay Wertz has won top honor in THE USA "BEST BOOKS 2011" AWARDS in the History: Military/Political category for his prominent book: War Stories:
World War II Firsthand - THE PACIFIC - Volume One - Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal.

USABookNews.com, the premiere online magazine and review website for mainstream and independent publishing houses, announced the winners and finalists of THE USA "BEST BOOKS 2011" AWARDS. Over 500 winners and finalists were announced in over 140 categories covering print, e-books and audio books. Awards were presented for titles published in 2010 and 2011.

Jeffrey Keen, President and CEO of USA Book News, said this year's contest yielded an unprecedented number of entries, which were then narrowed down to over 500 winners and finalists. Keen says of the awards, now in their ninth year, "The 2011 results represent a phenomenal mix of books from a wide array of publishers throughout the United States."

THE PACIFIC---Volume One-- Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal, is the latest book from Mr. Wertz. This first volume premieres a ten part book series: War Stories: World War II Firsthand, which offers a unique approach to World War II by weaving stories of combat veterans of all forces into an event by event history of the war. The series includes hundreds of first person interviews and oral histories of the soldiers on the ground, the sailors on the high seas, and airmen in the sky.

THE PACIFIC---Volume One-- Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal features heart-wrenching testimony from the survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Bataan Death March and much, much more. Extensive research has resulted in finding those who are willing to share their personal, often unusual, and always fascinating wartime recollections. The book is fully illustrated with dynamic images, including color photos; and specially designed 3-D maps.

Tom Brokaw, of NBC News, recently praised THE PACIFIC, as "a stunning and evocative reminder of the personal heroism and epic battles over and on seas, island, and mainland, as told by those who were there. Magnificent."

Volume Two of the War Stories series is now in production and is expected to be released in January.

Jay Wertz is the author of three other books -- The Native American Experience, The Civil War Experience 1861-1865, and co-author of Smithsonian's Great Battles and Battlefields of the Civil War. His television credits include the award-winning 13-part documentary series Smithsonian's Great Battles of the Civil War.
