STOP & SHOP AND ISLAND HARVEST KICK OFF HOLIDAY TURKEY & TRIMMINGS COLLECTION CAMPAIGN

Written by Don  |  02. November 2011

MINEOLA, NY - November 2, 2011 - To help struggling Long Island families who may not be able to enjoy the warmth of a traditional holiday meal, Island Harvest, Long Island's largest hunger relief organization, and Stop & Shop have joined forces in Island Harvest's annual Turkey and Trimmings Collection Campaign. The campaign runs between November 1 and December 30 and will help provide critical food support to nearly 300,000 Long Islanders - including over 110,000 children - who know the effects of hunger first hand. Stop & Shop customers can do their part in helping those Long Islanders in need by purchasing a pre-packaged bag of all the trimmings necessary to complement a traditional holiday dinner. The bag of trimmings consists of Stop & Shop brand stuffing mix, canned corn, cranberry sauce, fruit cocktail, turkey gravy and cut yams. Participating in the Turkey and Trimmings Collection Campaign is as easy as one, two, three. Simply pick up a pre-packaged bag of trimmings at any Long Island Stop & Shop store for $7.50, pay for it at the register and drop the bag in the collection box on your way out. A portion of the proceeds benefits Island Harvest. To complete the holiday meal, Stop & Shop is donating 1,700 turkeys to Long Island's food banks as part of its Turkey Express program that will deliver nearly 20,000 turkeys to hunger relief organizations in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Connecticut this holiday season. Stop & Shop is committed to fighting hunger through the Food for Friends campaign, which will raise over $2 million this year for more than 300 local hunger relief organizations through the six states in which it operates. All Long Islanders are encouraged to help their neighbors who may be struggling due to the current economic conditions by donating a turkey, supermarket turkey coupons, ham or other meat, non-perishable food items, supermarket gift cards or money to help Island Harvest in its mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. Stop by one of the numerous food collection events or drop-off locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. For a complete listing of food drives, please visit www.islandharvest.org.
