LongIsland.com’s 2015 November Family Fun Guide: Festivals, Turkey Trots, Veterans Day Celebrations, and So Much More to be Thankful For!

Written by Lyndsay McCabe  |  31. October 2015

It’s November, and it is time to go full-swing into Fall and the start of the holiday season!  Though the temperatures are steadily dropping and more and more events are being held indoors, activities for adults and kids alike are just heating up.  The fall festival season is wrapping up, so be sure to go to the last of these festival and craft fair events, which will also help you get a head start on holiday shopping for the whole family!  Many of these fairs are also some of the last big outdoor extravaganzas for the season, like the Apple Festival at the Islip Grange, where you can take your last spin around the carousel before the Spring.  As always, you can also attend or watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which is certainly the biggest public celebration of the month.

With so much to be thankful for, it is hard to know where to start as far as events for November.  Veterans Day is on November 11th, which falls on a Wednesday this year, and there are lots of events that will not just honor and celebrate veterans, but will honor their caregivers and provide information on how to receive health and housing benefits for vets.  This year, Veterans Day is all about education, so bring your questions and paperwork to one of the library seminars for answers to all of your queries!

In addition to helping Long Island’s veterans, there are numerous turkey trots scheduled for the morning of Thanksgiving that will benefit local not-for-profits.  Make sure to register your spot in the race as soon as you choose to sign up, as the cost of registration increases as you wait closer to the day of the race.

As of all events, make sure to RSVP or register if necessary and call ahead, especially in the case of inclement weather, to make sure events are still being held.  Give thanks and have some fabulous Fall fun with these activities!

More Fall Fun for November:

Make the Most of Your Local Park
Since we have entered the off-season for state parks, you can now get into state parks without paying a fee.  Though the weather isn’t ideal for going to the beach, you can still get exercise, go to a state park family program, or collect natural craft materials.

Take Your Family Photo for the Holidays
Instead of spending money to have professional photos done, go DIY and design your own backdrop for a great family photo.  Photobooth themes are quite popular, and you can have your kids pick out their own prop for a wacky family photo to send out for the holidays!

Cycle Under the Fall Foliage
You can still catch some of the beautiful yellows, oranges, and russet reds of Fall in November, and one of the best ways to experience foliage is to take bike paths through the woods.  The Greenbelt Trail is one of the best known spots for biking, but there are many other lesser-known trails on our guide.
