Though October is National Pizza Month across the United States, everybody that lives on Long Island knows that traveling far is not necessary for the best pizza in the country. The history of National Pizza Month dates back to 1984, when Gerry Durnell, founder of Pizza Today magazine, decided to create the month-long observance in conjunction with the first issue of his magazine's publication. Pizza.com states that 94% of Americans eat pizza at least once per month, equating to 100 acres of pizza being eaten daily for an average of 350 slices consumed per second.

With hundreds upon hundreds of pizzerias on Long Island alone, every one of us will swear by a different local spot. Our fierce loyalties to our favorite local pizza joints makes deciding on a definitive list of pizzerias a nearly impossible task. But with so many pizza places packed into one area, the need to stand-out among the crowd is vital, and many pizzerias have done just that with some incredible specialty pies.

In honor of National Pizza Month, check out one of the following pizzerias on Long Island that boasts unique and delicious specialty pies!
