The first official day of fall or autumnal equinox is on September 22nd. Fall is synonymous with the harvest, crisp air, falling leaves, geese flying overhead, pumpkins, bonfires, football games, and apple cider.  Think of the falling leaves as summer's wave good-bye. The landscape silently explodes with vibrant colors of red, yellow, and orange. Baseball season hits the homestretch, while football season is just warming up. Temperatures begin to drop, nights begin to get longer, and all the outdoor critters are storing up for the long haul of winter.

In order to make the most of autumn right here on Long Island, create a fall bucket list: a list of things that you want to do this fall. Here’s a bounty of ideas––to help you get started. Have a joyous autumn!
  • Go on a hike at a park or nature preserve.  Enjoy the sound of leaves crinkling and crackling underneath your shoes.
  • Go apple picking and bake a pie with a flaky, light, delicious crust–from scratch.
  • Celebrate the colors of the season. Go shopping and get a sweater in warm pumpkin or burnt sienna.  Or get  a few throw pillows in chocolate browns.
  • Rake a giant pile of leaves, take a few steps back, run, and jump in! End up lying on the ground, face up, watching the leaves fall from the trees, and the clear blue sky beyond.
  • Get a horn of plenty-a woven horned basket-and fill it with autumn produce such as apples, grapes, pears, potatoes, Indian corn, nuts, and wheat.
  • Take a hayride to  a pumpkin patch.  It doesn't get better than picking them off of the vine yourself.
  • Have a professional photographer take photo-shoot among the falling leaves.  (Think holiday cards.)
  • Decorate the outside of your house with mums and Halloween decorations from local nurseries.
  • Make fall potpourri out of some nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, and cloves-to bring the smells of the season indoors.
  • Take the time to witness the dramatic display of colors amongst the foliage –bronze, brilliant orange, gold, crimson, and other autumn shades with the ones you love.
