Greenport Maritime Festival was the place to be this past weekend. Boats of all different varieties and sizes could be seen ornamenting the grassy expanse of Mitchell Park while lines of food, craft, and business vendors flanked the village streets. Music could be heard all over Greenport, acoustic guitar session sounds emanating from local shops and restaurants, along with performances in the park. Thousands of people came out to enjoy the beautiful weekend weather and participate in the nautical festivities.

Saturday morning started off with a big parade marching down Front Street. The Greenport Fire Department, Eastern Long Island Hospital, and the East End Twirlers were just a few of the procession participants. Of course, in true maritime style, people dressed as mermaids and pirates could also be seen making their way down the street.

Sunday was just as festive and fun, despite the sudden rain pour late Sunday afternoon. The morning began with Paul Drum’s Breakfast Fundraiser: A Mermaid and Pirate Experience, a two-seating buffet at Front Street Station to benefit the newly formed Paul Drum Nautical Education Program. The program was formed in cooperation with the East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation to raise funds to support and teach children safety about the surrounding waters of Greenport. Through this free program children will learn hands on right from the experts about ecological theories, boating safety, and receive unique lectures and programs.

Both days featured fun activities for both kids and adults. There was face painting, tours of the historic sites and the antique carousel in Mitchell Park was going round and round all weekend. Booths and restaurants were also busy serving local brews, vino and grub to visitors at the event.
