If your child has outgrown their car seat, Walmart, the big box retailer, is using its massive network to offer parents gift cards so parents can purchase a new one when they trade in an old or expired seat. While the trade-in program is being run at locations nationwide, many Long Island stores are participating. You can find a store near you through their online locator app.

The program will run from September 16th until September 30th, during Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA)’s Baby Safety Month.

According to the company, the car seats will be 100 percent recycled by TerraCycle, volunteer-based program that collects non-recyclable pre-consumer and post-consumer waste, and then partners with corporate donors or municipalities to turn it into raw material to be used in new products.

On its website Walmart outlined how their program works:

• Bring your car seat to the trade in event at your participating Walmart Supercenter. 
• Take the car seat to the Customer Service counter to be recycled
• Receive your $30 Walmart gift card* that you can use in-store or online to buy items for your baby

There is a limit  of two trade-ins per household. Any car seat brand will be accepted but booster seats are not eligible.

The goal of the program  is to prevent car seats from ending up in landfills and to incentivize parents to upgrade car seats to safer versions.
