Movie Roundup: Guardians of the Galaxy Adds Highest Grossing U.S. Release of the Year to Its Track Record

Written by Wendy L  |  01. September 2014

Last week, we reported ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ became the highest-grossing film for the summer as it came back on top at the weekend box office, but over the Labor Day holiday weekend, we can add highest-grossing film of the year to its track record, too.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ remained in first place at the weekend box office, bringing in an extra $16.3 million on a rather flat Labor Day box office. The film is pushing towards a gross of over $274.6 million in its five weeks since release, which means it beats out ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ for the title of highest domestic grossing film for 2014.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ also maintained its standing at the box office this holiday weekend in second place with an additional $11.8 million. The film has grossed $162.4 million in its four weeks since release.

‘If I Stay,’ which was neck and neck with TMNT last weekend also remained in position at the box office for third place, bringing in an additional $9.3 million. The film has grossed $29.8 million in its two weeks since release.

Of the new releases over the weekend, including ‘As Above, So Below,’ they were clearly no competition for the summer sequel films. ‘As Above, So Below’ is also a modest to low budgeted film. It came in fourth place at the weekend box office with $8.3 million on its opening weekend.

Even as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and other summer releases showed staying power, combined with other films that didn’t perform as well over the summer, it’s been a rough ride at the box office with numbers down dramatically compared to last year.
