To Every Season: Change, Change, Change...

Written by interior-design  |  30. August 2004

Labor Day signifies the end of summer, a shift in the weather, the beginning of the school calendar and a turn in the leaves. Why not also consider it a time to rotate your dcor? Out with the bright floral bouquets and beach scenes, and in with the fall foliage, berry bundles and deep rich palates. Although it's not quite time to unpack the pumpkins and turkeys, certainly this month can be considered transitional. Change your dcor as you change the clothing in your closets! As we sift through our piles of sweaters, wool slacks and mufflers, remember the rule of thumb, "If you haven't worn it in two years, donate it to charity." Space is the biggest luxury. When exercising this seasonal ritual, also consider a rotation of your slip covered seating, drapery panels, lamp shades, throw rugs and accent pillows. Don't discard, just store away neatly and clearly labeled for next season. One of the neatest tricks to seasonally refresh your space is to switch your artwork from wall-to-wall. A familiar look on a different wall is good for the senses. It also helps you to appreciate the architecture of your home and get the most mileage from your possessions. If you have a lot of art to choose from and extra storage space, replacing instead of rotating the summer scenes with the fall looks might work nicely. If you are really savvy about it, you might even be able to get away with using the same nail and just adjusting the length of the hanging wire, to avoid the need to put extra holes in your wall. Seasonally rotating dcor might seem like a lot of work, but refreshing your environment is the easiest way to combat the doldrums of the crisper months We are fortunate here in New York to have four distinct seasons.
