Suspect Charged With Murder After Pushing Man Off an LIRR Platform
Early Saturday morning a 49-year-old man from Freeport was killed after coming in contact with the third rail of a Long Island Railroad track. 911 operators were called at 4:50 a.m. when the man had been spotted on the tracks. The initial report was that he suffered a seizure and fell off the platform but a collaborative investigation between the MTA and police found he was attacked by another person on the platform.
The MTA Police Department and Nassau County Police found that a 34-year-old Roosevelt resident was involved in the Freeport man’s death. A joint investigation between the two departments identified the culprit in the LIRR death as Nehim Levy.
“This is a great example of the outstanding working relationship the two agencies share which led to the expeditious arrest of a Homicide Suspect,” said Inspector Joseph Martelli Commanding Officer of the MTAPD Detective Division.
The altercation at the Bellmore station between the two men started with a verbal spat before it turned into the fatal physical altercation. During the fight Levy tossed the Freeport man off the platform where he was killed after landing on the third rail. The LIRR’s Babylon line was suspended between Freeport and Wantagh because of the police investigation but was later restored that day.
Levy is due back in court on August 28 and will be arraigned in Hempstead’s First District court. He’s being charged with Felony Murder and Robbery in the First Degree. The deceased Freeport man’s identity is currently being withheld until members of his family have been notified.
