Written by Debbi Spiegel  |  15. August 2012

Italian Ices are the perfect sweet treat on a hot summer day!  Prepare your taste buds for a cool, refreshing alternative to ice cream.  Flavors range from standard lemon to mind-boggling menus of exotic choices.  They can be water or creme based and can also be made in sugar free or fat free.  Don't let the long lines scare you.  Generous samples are offered for the indecisive.  Sizes range from the old-fashioned squeeze cups to family size take home containers.  Become your own mix-ologist by creating your own flavor combinations.
Many debate the folklores around the creation of Italian Ice. Western historians believe the refreshing treat was discovered accidentally under the Roman Emperor Nero’s rule.  Others believe the Chinese gave Marco Polo the treat. Marco Polo enjoyed it so much that he took the idea with him when returning to Europe, thus becoming “Italian Ice”. Although it is not clear exactly who to credit, one thing is clear, Italian Ice are delicious!

Unfortunately, Italian Ices are a seasonal business.  At the end of the season you might be able to buy your favorite flavors in bulk at a discount and hoard them in your freezer all winter.
