Long Island Lighthouse Cruises

East End Lighthouses offers a series of guided lighthouse tours and events. The following lighthouse cruises explore Long Island's maritime history, provide a unique opportunity to enjoy the sights and also help to raise funds for lighthouse preservation. Saturday, September 6, 2008 Visit to Long Beach Bar "Bug" Lighthouse Departure time 3:30pm A unique opportunity to visit and tour the totally replicated 1870 lighthouse, a project that took only 60 days. An opportunity will be given to climb into the lantern room of this working lighthouse and its exterior walkway. Narration and description of its replication will be given by Lighthouse Historian Merlon Wiggin, the person who originated and planned for its rebuilding. Departure time from Greenport will be shortly after 1540 hours on the "Peconic Star II." Buffet dinner, Long Island wines, and other beverages included in the all-inclusive cost of $90.00 per person for members, $95.00 for nonmembers. Space is limited. Call 631-477-4121 or visit http://www.eastendlighthouses.org CRUISE TO BENEFIT EAST END LIGHTHOUSES ---------- Saturday, September 27, 2008 Lighthouse, Maritime History & Gardiner's Island Cruise Departure time 3:30pm Board the "Peconic Star II" for a cruise on the waters of eastern Long Island and Gardiner's Bay. Learn about the unique maritime history of the area including that of Plum Island and Gardiner's Island. Hear recent findings about the Revolutionary War history of the area, and see where the first engagement between British and Continental troops took place. We will follow the routes of American and British war ships in their 1812 - 1814 naval engagements. See the Orient Point, Plum Island, Little Gull Island, Race Rock and Long Beach Bar lighthouses close up, and hear about their history. Enjoy a close-up view of Gardiner's Island, where Captain Kidd buried his treasure, and the site of its lighthouse and fortification. The "Peconic Star II" provides better close-up views of these lighthouses than any other cruise vessel. Maritime and lighthouse history narration provided by local historian, Dr. Merlon E. Wiggin.
