Dead Humpback Whale Found on Coast of Montauk

Written by erin__l  |  26. July 2019

A dead humpback whale found on the coast of Montauk is slowly making its way closer to land. It was first discovered on Wednesday that the dead whale was six miles off the coast but is slowly coming closer and closer to land each day.

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, Coast Guard, NOAA Fisheries, and East Hampton Town Police are all closely working with one another to safely secure the whale. The goal is to bring the whale closer to the shore so that they can move the creature to a safe location where it will be examined. Once the dead whale is moved to a safe, secure location, it will be undergoing a necropsy to examine and determine the cause of death.
