Long Island Museums that are Great for Kids

Summer may be here, but unfortunately the weather won’t be great every single day. If you find yourself stuck at home with the kids on a rainy day this summer, why not spend your time at a local museum?
 
With over 100 museums to choose from on Long Island, you will definitely be able to find one that is interesting for the whole family. Here are just a few suggestions (be sure to click on the links for addresses and other information):
 
Cradle of Aviation Museum
Garden City
Hours: Sunday - Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Take a look into some of the innovations in flight that were developed in the Hempstead Plains area, which was dubbed the “Cradle of Aviation” in the 1920s. This museum features interactive exhibits, guided tours and self-guided tours.
 
Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center
Garden City
Hours: Tuesday - Sunday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Learn about fire prevention through hands-on activities and live demonstrations. This museum offers birthday parties as well and several fundraising events throughout the year.
 
African American Museum of Nassau County
Hempstead
Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Learn about the history of African American culture through the exhibits featured at this museum.
 
The American Guitar Museum
New Hyde Park
Contact museum for hours.
Get your kids interested in music at the American Guitar Museum. Their collection includes old world luthiers, blueprints, drawings and other high-tech guitar equipment.
 
Railroad Museum of Long Island
Greenport, Riverhead
Greenport Hours: Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Riverhead Hours: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m - 4 p.m.
Learn about the history of trains and the Long Island Railroad at either of these museums. You can easily get to either museum by taking the train.
 
Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium
Cold Spring Harbor
Hours: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
A great place to visit even when it’s not raining! With eight outdoor ponds and two aquarium buildings, this aquarium has the largest living collection of New York freshwater fishes, reptiles and amphibians.
