Another great way to get to know a facility is to attend their opening Gala or Benefit. These are lovely affairs, are tax deductible, and put you on the 'inside track.'

Listed here are some of the 'specials' I have uncovered through the Long Island Museum Association. They are in no particular order. Take advantage of some extra exciting summer entertainment for the family!

Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society - "100 Years on the Bay" - an exhibit that looks back over the last hundred years at the Bellport Yacht Club - Exhibit opens July 15 for the summer - Opening Gala, July 15 at the museum with refreshments, dancing, auction. Summer Sundays at Brookhaven National Laboratory - Sundays starting July 9 - tour a special facility each week and join in the family fun Whiz Bang Science Show. Audience participation is a hoot. Call: 631-344-8687

East Hampton Historical Society - Benefit Cocktail Party, A Moment in Time: Summer 1925 on July 14 - Hands-On History for Children with Barbara Driver, Wednesdays (Programs include role playing as colonial children, making tea from herbs, playing with colonial toys, and more) - Family History Fair: 1775, Saturday, July 15 Call: 631-324-6850

Quogue Historical Society - 18th and 19th Century Buildings Open for Tours - Exhibits in the schoolhouse include Whaling in the 1800s, Home & Hearth; and School Days in the 1860s, Wednesday & Friday, 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon. - 32nd Annual Art Show & Sale, Saturday, August 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call: 917-326-0602

CMEE - Children's Museum of the East End - July is Hola Ninos! on Saturdays - presented in English and in Spanish, kids can make a doll family, a colorful collage, learn about the cocina and the bano and find out that the cow says moo in all languages. Call: 631-537-8250

Cradle of Aviation Museum - The Space Shuttle Discovery and its seven-member crew are set to launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center at 3:49 p.m. EDT on Saturday, July 1. See it live on the Cradle's IMAX Dome. Kids explore the wonders of flight and the wonders of the solar system at one week mini-camps, hands-on activities, art projects, aerospace experiments, IMAX films and gallery visits.
