Remember, it's not what you thought . . .

The event is over and everyone is excited about how well it went. But those who participated may have a different opinion. And that is the opinion that really matters. In order to grow any event; you must make adjustments that better meet the needs of your target clientele. I recently produced a triathlon that was held on the Sunday of the monsoon. Over four inches of water fell during the event, but given that challenge, we still produced a safe event. Prior planning had a lot to do with that. Right after the event, I emailed the participants asking them for their feedback. I start the email by listing a number of changes that we already know we are going to make and thanking them for their efforts. I then ask them for their comments. Here is where you need to stay focused because some of the comments may not be positive. However, you MUST answer each email and explain why some things can not be changed and why some things are done the way they are. After reading the emails, make a list of the changes that you can implement. When you send out applications or flyers for next year's event, remember to list the changes you are making. This shows that you care about the event and are not just in it for the money. People are more likely to attend an event that leaves them with a positive feeling. Remember, it is not what you thought . . . Here's to a safe and healthy summer!
