High School TV Quiz Show Champs!

Bethpage, NY, June 20, 2011. After dominating every team they have faced, White Plains High School has won the 2011 Tri-State Challenge Championship. The tri-state championship match against Kellenberg Memorial High School aired in HD on Sunday, June 19, at 8:00 PM on MSG Varsity (Cablevision's iO TV, Channel 14). In addition to bragging rights and the Challenge Cup trophy, White Plains High School was awarded $10,000, with each team member also receiving $500. The championship match can be viewed again on MSG Varsity on Monday, June 20, and Friday, July 1, at 5:30 PM. The match can also be viewed on News 12 Westchester (and News 12 Connecticut, News 12 New Jersey, News 12 The Bronx and News 12 Brooklyn) on June 25 and 26, as well as July 2 and 3, at 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM. It will air on News 12 Long Island on June 26, as well as July 2 and 3, at 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM. Notes popular show host Jared Cotter, "My hat goes off to the White Plains High School team. They were on the mark every match this season and were determined to be the Tri-State Champs. It's been a real pleasure working with each of them." A former Fuse TV host, Cotter was also a semi-finalist on American Idol. Members of the victorious White Plains High School team include Aneesh Bhattacharya, Adam Jaffe (team captain), Alec Johnsson, Jens Sannerud and Eric Smiley. The team's academic advisor is Les Roby. Throughout the season, competing teams were quizzed on their knowledge of history, arts and literature, current events, math, and science before a live audience. "It's been an amazing run for White Plains High School and we congratulate the team on its victory," notes Theresa Chillianis, MSG Varsity's General Manager. "Over 184 high schools competed this season on The Challenge, but only they can claim a perfect winning streak. MSG Varsity, the families of the team members and everyone at White Plains High School are extremely proud of this accomplishment." MSG Varsity, Cablevision's 24/7 television network dedicated to everything high school, features new episodes of The Challenge every Sunday through Friday at 5:30 PM. The Challenge began as a Long Island effort 14 years ago and now includes 184 high schools from the entire tri-state area - Long Island (with Nassau and Suffolk as two distinct regions), the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Connecticut. Schools advance in the tournament through a series of elimination rounds. After months of competition, one school in each region is crowned regional champion, winning $2500 for their school. The final winning teams from each region go on to The Challenge Championship where they square off against one another in a Tri-State Showdown. The school crowned Tri-State Champion will receive $10,000 in prize money and each student participating in the final Challenge Championship game will receive $500. The show has received a Beacon Award - the industry's highest award for public affairs excellence - as well as a New England Cable & Telecommunications (NECTA) Award for Public Service and Excellence in Cable Television.
