Helping Your Kids Survive the End of the School Year

Written by Kelly Tenny  |  03. June 2014

With the last month of school upon us, and the kids getting geared up for summer vacation, it’s important to help them maintain their focus and get through these last few weeks of school. Now is not the time to start slacking off, it’s time to finish off the year on a positive note! As a parent you always want the best for your children and helping them survive the end of the year is a great way to support them and aid them on their path towards academic achievement.

Whether they just need some encouragement, or a tutor to help them pass their exams with flying colors, be ready to lend a helping hand. This can be a very exciting time of the year for your kids, especially with the prospect of summer right around the corner, but it can also be a very stressful time. Support them and set them up for success.

Homework: It can be very tempting for kids to start slacking off towards the end of the year but it’s very important to end the year right. Check to make sure the kids are still focusing on their homework. Set up “homework time” in an area that has minimal distractions. Try visiting your local library to do homework there. Another good tip is, do not let the kids move on to TV or video games until they have completed all of their assignments.

Testing: We all remember the onslaught of testing at the end of the year and how stressful that time can be. To set your kids up for success, and less stress, encourage them to start studying early. Help them study too. Make flash cards and quiz them on the material. Consider offering positive reinforcements and rewards. If they answer the quiz questions right, take them out and treat them to some ice cream!

Tutors: Tutors are a great investment to make for your kids if they are struggling with the end of the year and your efforts so far have not been yielding the results you both want. Conveniently most schools offer their own tutoring services, and many teachers are more than willing to stay a little late or come in a little early to help their students. Some libraries also offer tutoring services. If those options don’t work for you, you could also hire a tutor.

Do you have any tips of your own on how to help the kids make it through the last few weeks of school?
