Titan is excited to find his forever family here on Long Island!

Four Legged Friends is a weekly column by Bariann Browne, lifelong Long Island resident and communications coordinator for North Shore Animal League America. Bariann’s weekly posts highlight the League’s amazing animals, just a small example of the thousands of loving, loyal pets waiting for forever homes at your local animal shelter.

A few weeks ago, the League was contacted by Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter (BARCS) when the organization had to shut its doors to ensure the safety of its temporary four-legged residents. BARCS was doing everything possible to protect the city’s homeless pets, but as the unrest in the city worsened, it was decided the best response was to evacuate its most vulnerable dogs to make room for the many who’d been displaced. Titan was one of those pups who made the trip from Maryland with the League’s Emergency Rescue Team and is now looking for a home of his very own.

Titan is a 1 1/2-year old male husky mix with one blue eye and one brown eye. He is very housebroken, full of energy and spirit, and super sweet. He’s smart as a whip and knows sit, paw, down, and speak! Titan will do best in a home with previous dog experience, no cats, children over 12, and would like to meet any canine companions at our adoption center first. Titan's adoption number is R161142. Good news, Long Island! Titan has been adopted, and loves his new fur-ever home!

Our next four-legged friend is Shelby Slippers. Shelby Slippers is a 9-year old black beauty! She enjoys attention, all forms of affection, and adores everyone she meets. This lady loves to lounge but will pounce when you say it's time to play. Sweet, friendly, and warm, Shelby Slippers is the perfect addition to your family. She is truly beautiful inside and out! She is truly a lap cat and is content being brushed for hours, with room for playtime. Rumor has it she plays fetch!

Miss Slippers isn’t a fan of other cats and is looking for someone who will help her gain her confidence again. It won’t be hard to do! She will thrive in a home with no other pets or young children. Shelby Slipper’s diabetes is easily managed with medicine and a special diet. Shelby Slippers’ adoption number is R101754.

Like Titan, Lulu is a survivor. Lulu is about 6 years old and a creamsicle-colored cattle dog mix. She was surrendered to North Shore Animal League America when her owner lost his home as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Devastating to any dog, Lulu continues to have heart and spirit. Sweet, lovable, and loyal are just a few words to describe this wannabe lap dog. But don’t let Lulu’s love for cuddling fool you, true to the cattle breed, she’s intelligent and enjoys her time outside playing fetch just as much as belly rubs. Lulu can be selective with people and other canines, and needs an owner who is willing to reestablish the loving home environment and security she once knew.

Once that bond is established, her loyalty will be eternal. She would make a perfect companion on walks or as a couch potato. She is content just lounging around the yard on those lazy summer afternoons that are right around the corner! Lulu has a healthy appetite and is not inclined to share her food, and although we don’t expect that you’d find her meals tasty, Lulu would do best in a home with children over 16.

Lulu is that "once in a lifetime" dog for someone on Long Island. Lulu is very housebroken and knows her basic commands: sit, stay, speak, come, bark, up, place, and most importantly, kiss! For many victims of Hurricane Sandy, lives have been rebuilt and restored, but Lulu continues to wait for her new life to begin. Lulu’s adoption number is T79023.

Last but not least, ready to set sail is Pirate, is a 1-year old adorable Terrier mix and the cutest pup you’ll ever meet. He is friendly, affectionate, loyal, curious, and has tons of energy, so he’ll be great with kids older than 6. Pirate gives hugs and kisses, enjoys snacks, knows “sit,” and is looking for a big backyard to play in! Pirate’s adoption number is NCR6826. Good news, Long Island! Pirate has been adopted, and loves his new fur-ever home!

Titan, Shelby Slippers, Lulu, and Pirate are all waiting for their forever homes at our adoption center in Port Washington.
