Hot Spots: Weekly Watch for May 20 through May 23

Get ready to dance to great music this week on Long Island! There are also performances and more to enjoy! At The Suffolk Theater this week, enjoy Mambo Loco on Monday, “Words & Music,” a showcase of singers and songwriters on Tuesday and Country Club for country music dancing and instruction on Thursday. Other entertainment and activities going on during the week include a session on Hiking the Greenbelt Trail at Connetquot Public Library, open mic night at the Nutty Irishman, Bay Shore, an introduction and demonstration on making Spanish tapas at Cold Spring Harbor Library,  a performance of Grease at The Gateway Playhouse in Bellport and the Huntington YMCA 21st Annual Carnival. MONDAY – MAY 20, 2013

Who: Hiking The Greenbelt Trail At Connetquot Public Library
Info: Enjoy a talk with Tom Casey, hiker, outdoor enthusiast and vice president of the Greenbelt Trail conference. He’ll talk about the “other Long Island” as seen on the Greenbelt Trail. There are over 200 miles of hiking paths stretching from the LI Sound to the Great South Bay.

Who: Mambo Loco At The Suffolk Theater
Info: Mambo Loco formed in 2005 to bring classic music of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican origin. Enjoy an evening of the best of “Old School” Latin and Latin jazz music as well as Latin dance instruction.

TUESDAY – MAY 21, 2013

Who: “Words & Music” – Singers and Songwriters Showcase At The Suffolk Theater
Info: The evening is hosted by Bryan Downey as remarkable singers and songwriters are showcased. Professionals and amateurs will each perform approximately 20 minutes sharing special stories in both words and music.

Who: Open Mic Night At The Nutty Irishman, Bay Shore
Info: It’s open mic night, so come on down to The Nutty Irishman, Bay Shore to perform what your heart desires. Musicians, poets, standup comics are welcome! The event is hosted by Steve from That 70s Band.

WEDNESDAY – MAY 22, 2013

Who: Introduction to Spanish Tapas At Cold Spring Harbor Library
Info: Chef Richard will be on hand to discuss how tapas originated and provide demonstration on how to assemble them. Participants will be placed in groups to assemble their own tapas and present them on a platter. Different flavors can be enjoyed after completion. Sign up at the Information Services Desk. Cost: $6 For Materials

Who: Grease At The Gateway Playhouse in Bellport
Info: Enjoy a performance of the rock and roll musical classic set in 1959 at the fictional Rydell High School. It follows 10 working-class kids through the complexities of love, cars and drive-ins.

THURSDAY – MAY 23, 2013

Who: Country Club At The Suffolk Theater
Info: Looking for an evening of country music and dancing? DJ Frankie K your Country DJ will be on hand to provide line and couple dancing instruction. It’ll be a fun evening of pure country.
Cost: $15

Who: Huntington YMCA 21st Annual Carnival
Info: The carnival runs through May 27. Enjoy an exotic petting zoo, international food, thrill and kiddie rides, games, magic illusion shows, reptile shows and Huntington Legends on the I-CON stage.
Cost: Free Event, $25 POP
Time & Place: 6PM to 10:30PM at Huntington YMCA, 60 Main Street, Huntington
