Williston Park Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Drive-By Shooting, Officials Say

Hempstead, NY - May 10, 2018 - The Major Case Bureau reports the arrest of a Williston Park man for Attempted Murder that occurred on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 6:59 p.m. in Hempstead.
 
According to Gang Investigations Squad Detectives, Akini Gibbs, 34, was operating a gray 2009 BMW on Jackson St. with a passenger. He then took a handgun from under the seat and fired several shots at an unknown victim. Hempstead police officers responded to a “Shot Spotter” notification and observed the vehicle on Front St. The defendant refused to pull over and fled on foot. He was apprehended in a garage on Phoenix St. Shell casings were recovered at the scene of the incident.
 
The defendant is charged with Murder 2nd Degree (Attempt), Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, Burglary 3rd Degree and Unlawful Fleeing of a P.O. 3rd Degree. He will be arraigned on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at First District Court, Hempstead.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
