Berries Galore: Where To Pick Long Island's Juiciest Fruits

Written by Brian Re  |  08. May 2016

While many Long Islanders already have their sights set on summer, the arrival of berry picking season is sooner and packs just as much fun!  Berry picking has seemingly always been a staple of summer fun on Long Island thanks to its versatility as a great family activity and afternoon date destination. Whether you're heading out to a farm to pick up a container, or looking to pick your own from the bushes, it's essentially guaranteed that you will be enjoying the freshest and juiciest berries around.

Before heading off on your own very-berry adventure, it's important to keep in mind what berries are in season.  Typically, the season begins the first week of June with strawberries. By the arrival of July, blueberries and raspberries should in season and ripe for the picking. Blackberries serve as the capstone to the season and are generally harvested in August.  While this timeline is usually adhered to, weather is certainly unpredictable, so it's always a good idea to contact your intended location to find out what is available.  Plus, some farms specialize in other items and unique treats, so who knows what you might discover!
