GO GREEN AND PREVENT ID THEFT AT TFCU'S 10TH SHREDDING DAY

Written by William Corbett  |  27. April 2011

Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), Long Island's largest credit union, will host its tenth Shredding Day on April 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. The e-waste collection and paper shredding "green" event will take place at the credit union's Farmingville branch parking lot, located at 2410 North Ocean Avenue. Members of the credit union and community residents are invited to drop off up to 5 boxes (approximately 50 lbs), of personal paper documents and 10 electronic waste (e-waste) items for secure destruction and recycling. Those who bring paper documents can watch the shredding done on-site. Computer hard drives and other electronics that contain data will be securely shredded shortly after collection. The electronic materials that will be collected include obsolete and broken computers, computer monitors, electronic games, keyboards, scanners, printers and CD players. The items collected will not be resold or refurbished. "This will be our tenth Shredding Day. TFCU members and residents will have the opportunity to bring old documents and statements containing personal and financial data to our Farmingville branch for proper destruction and recycling. This TFCU program was also initiated to help reduce the incidence of identity theft and fraud. Shredding Day is also an environmental program that raises consumer awareness of the need for proper recycling of paper and electronics," said Robert G. Allen, TFCU President/CEO. Cintas Document Management will be responsible for destroying the paper records, and e-Scrap Destruction of Islandia will provide the secure destruction and recycling of e-waste. All the electronics collected will be recycled properly so that they will never end up in a landfill. TFCU has sponsored nine Shredding Days, collecting a total of 73,952 pounds of paper and 47,284 pounds of electronics. More than 2,130 members and local residents have participated in TFCU Shredding Days.
