In-person New York State boating safety classes have been postponed until furtner notice due to the coronavirus pandemic, but several online courses are available which will satisfy the new legal educational requirements for operators of motorized watercraft.

The new legislation, Brianna’s Law, named after 11-year-old Brianna Lieneck who was killed in a 2005 boating accident, requires that all operators of motorized watercraft complete a state-approved boating safety course. The law went into effect January 2020.

The New York State Parks website lists the following online courses as state-approved for meeting the mandatory requirement. Course prices range from free to $34.95.

·       BOATERexam

·       Boat-ED

·       Boat U.S.

·       United States Power Squadrons

When a person is required to complete a course varies by age.

  • Motor boat operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1993 must complete a course to operate a motor boat this season.
  • Motor boat operators born after Jan. 1, 1988 must complete a safety course beginning in 2022.
  • Motor boat operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1983 must complete a safety course beginning in 2023.
  • Motor boat operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1978 must complete a safety course beginning in 2024.
  • All motor boat operators regardless of age must complete a safety course beginning in 2025.

Failure to comply could result in a fine up to $250.
