Boston Bombing Suspect Captured, Area Lockdown Lifted

Written by Lyndsay McCabe  |  19. April 2013

The second suspect in the Boston bombings has been captured Friday evening by police after a day of gunfights and panic.

"CAPTURED!!!" the Boston Police Department posted on Twitter. "The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody."

Dzokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, was that suspect taken into custody after hiding from the authorities in a boat parked in the backyard of a house in Watertown, Massachusetts.  He was found covered in blood from a gunshot wound from either yesterday or earlier today.

The arrest came 26 hours after the FBI circulated photos of Tsarnaev after the twin bombings at the Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured over 170 others.

Within the first two hours of the release of the photos, two men matching the descriptions shot and killed Sean Collier, a police officer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  They then went on to rob a 7-11 and carjack a Mercedes Benz with the driver inside.  The brothers, Dzokhar and Tamerlan, age 26, led the police on a wild car chase while they threw pipe bombs out the windows of the vehicle. Tamerlan was fatally shot by police.

The suspect, who is said to be a student at the University of Massachusetts, was transferred to the same hospital where a police officer is recovering from gunshot wounds sustained in fighting the Tsarnaev brothers.
