Daily Top 10: 10 of Long Island's Tastiest Frozen Yogurt Shops

Pinkberry by cherrylet, on FlickrFrozen yogurt first appeared on the scene in the 1970s in New England. It began as a soft-serve dessert by H.P. Hood. Frogurt, as it was called, has a taste slightly more tart than ice cream and is lower in fat because its recipe calls for milk instead of cream.  It wasn’t until the mid-1980s that frozen yogurt, also known as FroYo, really took off. It was recorded as 10% of the frozen dessert market. A lot has changed since FroYo’s early beginnings. One of the first FroYo products was Dannon’s “Danny,” a raspberry yogurt treat on a stick covered with dark chocolate. In modern times however, frozen yogurt is just as popular as ice cream, with FroYo shops in every town. Many of these shops have self-serve stations with a variety of rotating flavors and endless toppings to choose from including the classics such as rainbow sprinkles, nuts and chocolate sauce and newer ideas such as fruit bites, cereal, and candy pieces. Long Island is packed with independent FroYo shops and even a few franchised chain locations, the following ten businesses are just a small selection of some of the great shops you’ll stumble upon on many a Main Street.
