Celebrate National Siblings Day!

Written by Debbi Spiegel  |  10. April 2013

National Siblings Day is a day to honor, appreciate and cherish all brothers and sisters and memorialize those no longer with us.  Siblings are truly a special blessing that we probably all too often take for granted. They are often our best friends and supporters through life. According to the latest U.S. Census, 79% of all children in America grow up with siblings. Life is short.  They have the same blood running through their veins as you.  The siblings bonds are life-long relationships usually lasting from cradle to grave.  It is usually the longest relationship of a person’s life and typically much longer than a mother’s and father’s relationship.

This holiday was created by Claudia A. Evart to honor the memory of her brother and sister.  They died from tragic deaths.  She created the not for profit organization Siblings Day Foundation. Siblings Day follows the spirit of Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Grandparent’s Day – a great American tradition and celebration of family-unit values.  It is an uplifting celebration honoring people who have shaped our values, beliefs and ideals.  It is a relationship as equally important as a parent’s relationship.

Take the time to surprise your sibling with something to celebrate the day.

  • Give your sibling a hug.
  • Send an E-card.
  • Get together for dinner.
  • Write a poem.
  • Send a childhood photograph and share memories.
  • Do something special like a good deed or favor, errand or chore.
  • Pick up the phone and make peace if you've had issues.
  • Show some sibling love.
  • On average siblings fight once ever 10 minutes. The most common argument? Property. Toys, clothes, etc. “That’s mine!” Remember?
  • Thank your parents for giving you your sibling.
