WESTBURY, NY -- The Nassau-Mid-Island Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, continuing to retain its status as the largest such singing group on Long Island, will return to the stage at Carle Place High School, May 14-15, to provide a nostalgic look at the early 1900's on the one hand; and apply its barbershop-style of singing to more recent show-stoppers, on the other. In its 61st Annual Show, named "Remember When," music sung by the Long Island Harmonizers chorus, its talented quartets, plus a featured guest quartet traditionally part of the special program, will offer a Saturday evening performance to begin at 8:07 pm as well as at a Sunday matinee to start at 3:07 pm. Songs currently being prepared for the scripted two-hour show, include the rousing "South Rampart Street Parade," as well as barbershop arrangements of "Baby Face," "You Made Me Love You," and the greatly familiar 'If You Knew Susie." "Happy Days Are Here Again," one of the signature songs of the 1930's, and "Cabaret," from the 1966 Broadway hit musical of the same name, will be among the songs contrasting the old and the new presented in four-part a cappella harmony. All tickets to the 2011 show available at the door will be priced at $15 for regular admission. Carle Place H.S. is located at 168 Cherry Lane. As in previous years, a portion of the proceeds will be directed to a worthy Long Island charity. For the 61st Annual Show it will be AHRC Nassau, whose admirable work is directed at enriching the lives of local-area children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. "Barbershop harmony associated with music has come a long way and so has our Society that began with a meeting of 26 eager singers on a Tulsa, Oklahoma rooftop in 1938," notes Hal Verity, 2011 show chairman and the Chapter's current president. "Back then, the focus was on harmonies intended for groupings of just four voices (as illustrated by the foursome on the Society's first logo). Now, with an organization that has grown to nearly 30,000 members in the U.S. and Canada alone, it is choruses large and small that provide those vocal thrills and chills along with sounds of quartets, as well. And today," adds Verity, " the passionate love of barbershopping witnessed days long ago on an April evening remains strong with a preserved art form applied to a bit of nostalgia or to much newer songs. Expect our show to demonstrate it in a big way. " The nonprofit Long Island Harmonizers chorus under the direction of Maurice Debar, rehearses Tuesday evenings at Winthrop Hall, Church of the Advent, 555 Advent Street, in Westbury from 8 until 10:30 pm.
