Huntington Doctor Helps Over a Dozen Volunteer Firefighters Get Back into Fighting Shape

Huntington surgeon Dr. David Buchin, director of Bariatric Surgery at Huntington Hospital, and head of Long Island Obesity Surgery, PC recently had a reunion with some former patients, all volunteer members of the Huntington Manor Fire House, as the firefighters showed off their weight loss.

All told, 14 firefighters, ranging in age from 28 to 58 years old, underwent a bariatric procedure at Long Island Obesity Surgery, PC and together lost a total of over 1,400 lbs.

According to Dr. Buchin, most of the firefighters had multiple medical problems caused by obesity, including diabetes, breathing issues, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Those high-risk factors are now all resolved, Dr. Buchin stated.

“These volunteer firefighters have renewed health, mobility and energy,” said Dr. Buchin. “It’s very rewarding to see the success they have achieved, which has not only changed their lives, but also enabled them to continue to volunteer for their communities as fire fighters and essential first responders.”
