On the outside Charlotte’s Frozen Yogurt is a sweet and charming neighborhood ice cream parlor serving up everything from frozen yogurt and shakes to ice cream cookie sandwiches to Farmingdale locals. But, you would never know the 98-year-old secret that lives beneath it.

The parlor serves up soft-serve options as well as gelato, yogurt, ice cream and Italian ices, including an array of allergen-free options too. Guests can also enjoy coffee concoctions like frappuccinos or cafe au lait.

When owners Nick and John DeVito purchased the building five years ago, they were surprised to find out the secret history of the building at 294 Main Street in Farmingdale. Originally they had planned to rent out the apartments, and open up Charlotte’s Yogurt (named for their mother and grandmother) on the ground floor.

Shortly after, they discovered the basement was completed with 12 foot ceilings and walls, both made of decorative tin and a secret exit, which once was an actual bar around the Prohibition Era. Running with the idea, the brothers decided to turn Charlotte’s basement into a replica speakeasy. Today, the speakeasy can only be accessed through a secret bookcase door from the upstairs shop, and only with a secret password, which can be found on their website if you look hard enough.

Once inside, you’ll be greeted with vintage Art Deco decor, original wood beams and of course an impressive bar. Signature cocktails like the Bootlegger’s Old Fashioned or the Bee’s Knees can be enjoyed as well as a selection of beers and wine. Feeling hungry? Charlotte’s serves up house fare like chicken wings and sliders as well as individual artisan pizzas. And for sweet lovers? Don’t miss out on their frozen desserts from upstairs. During the warmer months, take a stroll to the back door entrance and relax in their outdoor garden seating. Be sure to check out their events calendar for upcoming parties and live performances. Charolette’s Speakeasy is open Thursday through Saturday from 7:30PM-12:30AM. For more information, visit here.
